Transcriptions

This is a collection of pieces by some of the great composers of early music. There are works by JS Bach, GF Handel and John Dowland.

Some have been transcribed for Guitar from the Lute. Others are a reworking for synthesisers from the 1990s including the Evolution Synthesis EVS1 and Korg DX5.

From the Baroque

These transcriptions to the electronic medium have been heavily imfluenced by the work of Wendy Carlos, a pioneer in the field of synthetic sound design and recording.

Those tracks selected here are a small part of a larger collection. In most cases they are excerpts of the full piece. Most last about a minute and give just a flavour of the full work.

Johann Sebastian Bach

JS%20Bach

Bach’s contribution to music of the Baroque period is outstanding. He introduced the German style of composition to influences from Italy and France.

He was highly regarded as a virtuoso organist and keyboard player whose ability to improvise was astounding. However, he had only moderate success in his lifetime as a composer, forever looking for patrons to support himself and his growing family.

It was not until the early 19th century that his works received the acclaim that has followed them to this day.

Music for the Royal Fireworks - La Rejouissance

A contemporary of Johan Sebastian Bach and Domenico Scarlatti, he is one of Baroque music’s most popular composers. Unlike Bach, Handel enjoyed significant success in his lifetime.

His operas in the Italian style were particularly popular until the fashion for them waned and he decided he had to find another opening for his music. It was through this that “The Messiah” came to fruition and the “oratorio” was born.

He was a prolific writer. His works include 42 operas, 29 oratorios, over 120 cantata, trios and duets, 16 organ concerti and many instrumental works including concerti grossi, the "Water Music" and "Music for the Royal Fireworks".
